NEW YORK -- The Yankees were pleased to scoreboard-watch from afar as the Blue Jays lent a helping hand toward securing the American League East this week, beating up on the visiting Red Sox north of the border.
But as they found out on Friday, the Blue Jays seem to be relishing their spoiler role, no matter who they play. Gregg Zaun's 14th-inning home run off Brian Bruney tipped the scales in the Yankees' longest game of the season, lifting Toronto to a 5-4 victory at New York.
"They've been tough on us all year -- Toronto, Baltimore, Tampa Bay," said Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon. "Why? We don't know. They play us so much that they don't fear the Yankees. They have a pretty good scouting report on us."
The defeat returned the Yankees to 2 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Red Sox, who celebrated being rid of the pesky Blue Jays with a victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field. The Yankees also lost ground in the AL Wild Card chase, their lead over the Tigers snipped to 4 1/2 games.
For the Yankees, the evening brought eight innings of frustration against a dominant Roy Halladay, who took a bid for a complete-game shutout into the ninth inning before New York found some hits and a little bit of luck.
"It's about as dominant as I've seen him," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "His pitch count was very good, and he was having an easy time with us. We didn't get very many good swings against him."
In a matchup of aces, Halladay had handcuffed New York, outdueling Chien-Ming Wang, but the Yankees' offense finally came alive in the ninth. Damon doubled and Bobby Abreu hit a broken-bat single to center field before Alex Rodriguez snapped out of a 3-for-27 funk with a run-scoring single to center.
Settling down, even with the shutout erased, Halladay appeared to have his complete game intact when Jorge Posada hit a soft ground ball to second base, but Aaron Hill committed a throwing error that first baseman Lyle Overbay bobbled, allowing Abreu to score.
Now with the tying runs on board, the Blue Jays called on Scott Downs to try for a one-out save. Robinson Cano singled past Hill's reach into right field for the third run, and a hobbled Jason Giambi -- inserted as a pinch-hitter in the eighth despite a bone bruise on the top of his right foot -- came through with a single to left, tying the game.
"It was pretty amazing against Doc," Giambi said. "He pretty much was dealing that whole game. We got some opportunities and got some guys on, had some hits and singles here and there and kept the train moving. Before we knew it, we had it tied up."
The comeback spurred a Yankee Stadium crowd of 54,151 to shake the building in celebration and spoiled the terrific effort by Halladay, who was charged with four runs but only one earned.
"It seems like every time we face him, he's real good," Damon said of Halladay. "I thought he was still real good there in the ninth. We just happened to get a few hits that found some holes. You don't see that too often, scoring four runs in an inning off him."
Scattering eight hits and striking out four, Halladay provided a tidy performance that was but a prequel as the game dragged on toward midnight. A total of 402 pitches were thrown, 213 by Yankees pitchers, in a marathon that ended with some finality after Zaun took a low Bruney fastball over the right-field wall in the top of the 14th.
Journeyman left-hander Joe Kennedy struck out pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit looking to end a four-hour, 45-minute game that would prove memorable only for the late comeback.
"I think it just shows how well we're playing and the character of this ballclub," Giambi said. "It's disappointing, no doubt about it. You want that win. But that's what this team has done, to grind itself back."
Several notable performances stood out in a Yankees relief corps that came on behind Wang, who was unsuccessful for a second time in an attempt to log his 19th victory of the season. Wang matched zeroes with Halladay through six innings but stumbled in the seventh, touched for two runs -- with the Yankees' bullpen warming, the Blue Jays put runners at the corners, opening the inning with hits by Hill and Russ Adams.
Zaun followed with a shot that forced Rodriguez to dive to his left, stabbing the grounder but allowing a run to score on the putout at first base. Adam Lind followed with a sharp single to right that scored Adams when Abreu's one-hop throw to the plate couldn't be handled by Posada, a tough error that would be protested by the Yankees.
Wang didn't pitch poorly, scattering two runs and six hits in a 100-pitch effort while walking one and striking out four, but he was certainly outpitched on a night that appeared to be Halladay's. Toronto pulled further away on Alex Rios' two-run homer off Edwar Ramirez in the eighth, preceding the ninth inning's events.
"There was nothing that he really did wrong or anything," Yankees pitching coach Ron Guidry said of Wang. "He was just stacked up against a real good pitcher. But that's what aces do."
With his father, Harlan, in attendance during his first visit to Yankee Stadium, rookie right-hander Joba Chamberlain showcased a biting slider to twirl two shutout innings, one of five New York relievers to work scorelessly. But against six Blue Jays relievers, the Yankees managed just three hits and couldn't push across the winning run.
"I certainly can't say that I wish it didn't happen this way, because of the fact that we came back," Torre said. "We're playing every inning of every game. We're supposed to have the advantage because of the fact that we're playing at home, but we just couldn't get a base hit to knock in a run."
